Spectrum Employee Volunteers Share Their Experience

At Spectrum, we are local - we work and live in the communities we serve and are committed to improving the lives of both our customers and employees. One way we do this is through our philanthropic program Spectrum Community Center Assist (SCCA). We sat down with several employees to learn more about their volunteer experience and the impact it had on their community.

In one to two sentences, please describe your role at Spectrum.

I think I might have the best job in the company. As a Field Operations Leadership Facilitator, I work with the Field Operations Leadership teams at all levels in both Hawaii and California to introduce and reinforce leadership competencies and skill sets. I have also learned so much from my peers across the nation and am grateful to be able to continue to learn and grow.

Which Spectrum Community Center Assist event did you volunteer for?

I volunteered at the SCCA event on Saturday, October 29, 2022 in Nānākuli, Hawai‘I, on the west side of O‘ahu.

How did the volunteer experience impact you?

Giving back to my community has always been very important to me. We partnered with ALU LIKE, Inc., an organization that supports everyone in the community – from kūpuna (seniors) to keiki (children), and everything in between. The work that was done and the technological support that Spectrum has provided will have a long-term positive impact on the community.

Why is volunteering in our communities important?

My high school’s motto was Noblesse Oblige, which we translated to: “much is expected of those to whom much has been given”. That has shaped me into who I am today. I try to give back to the community I live, work, and play in. My community raised me and gave me so many opportunities – I want to make sure that I am also looking for ways to give back.

In one to two sentences, please describe your role at Spectrum.

I am the Director of Field Engineering for the Northern New England area, specifically New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine. Our team is responsible for the design, construction, service, and maintenance of our state-of-the-art multi-service network. The majority of our network expansion this year involves building into the rural areas of these states. It has truly been an honor and a privilege to bring life changing broadband service to the farming and logging communities of the Northeast.        

Which Spectrum Community Center Assist event did you volunteer for?

I volunteered for the SCCA event with Kennebec Valley Community Action Program Center (KVCAP) in rural Waterville Maine. More than 25 employee volunteers, with support from the Waterville Area Habitat for Humanity organization, worked during a very hot summer day to make repairs to the facility.

How did the volunteer experience impact you?

This experienced filled me with pride in both my team and Spectrum. I was humbled, inspired, and grateful to work alongside my friends and colleagues in support of a wonderful cause. Giving back to our communities is hardwired in the DNA of Spectrum’s Northern New England employee base. It was breathtaking to see so many employees flock to the event.  Some traveled from three hours away.

Why is volunteering in our communities important?

I have had the good fortune of working in our industry for 24 years. In that time, I have personally seen how communication providers and the communities they serve go hand-and-hand.  We are an internal building block of the growth, development, and quality of life for every community we serve. Spectrum’s ongoing commitment to give back to the places we work, play, and live is refreshing and heartwarming. 

In one to two sentences, please describe your role at Spectrum.

I am a Senior Account Executive and I serve as the face of Spectrum Business to my local community by being involved with the Chamber of Commerce, networking groups, and various charities. I consult with local businesses to see how our products and services can help them reduce expenses, maximize productivity, and increase income.

Which Spectrum Community Center Assist event did you volunteer for?

I’ve participated in several SCCA events including the Watts Labor Action Committee and the Antelope Valley and Desert Haven Enterprises. I tend to travel to events anywhere in Southern California. This year I plan to drive to our events in Bakersfield and Long Beach.

Why is volunteering in our communities important?

Volunteering is important because I’ve seen the looks of both despair and hope on the faces of single moms, young children, and dads who felt they couldn’t make ends meet. Prior to starting with Spectrum almost 9 years ago, my family experienced a short span of homelessness while in between jobs that didn’t pay enough. I think giving others hope is my primary motivation. Knowing you’re not alone can make all the difference in the world.

In one to two sentences, please describe your role at Spectrum.

I am the Vice President of Customer Service Operations, supporting 1,600+ employees in the San Antonio Tech Com, the El Paso Airport, and the El Paso Gran Vista, with the two call types of Spanish/English Video Repair and Internet & Voice.

Which Spectrum Community Center Assist event did you volunteer for?

I volunteered for a SCCA event at Restore Education in San Antonio, Texas.

How did the volunteer experience impact you? 

Restore Education offers the San Antonio community a variety of resources. These include free High School Equivalency (GED) tutoring and exams, college readiness courses, English Second Language (ESL) classes, and a large range of career readiness trainings.

This volunteer experience with Restore Education was inspirational to say the least. Listening to the stories shared from participants in the program made me realize what a positive impact this organization is making not only in the community, but also in the lives of these individuals.

I also recognized myself in these stories. When I was 17 years old, I achieved my High School Equivalency through a similar program. With this support, I was able to go to college and hold a Bachelor of Science in Leadership. Restore Education provides an invaluable service to the community by making education and upward career mobility accessible to everyone.

Why is volunteering in our communities important?

The SCCA events give our employees an opportunity to meet other co-workers and work as a team. At Restore Education, we worked together to build computer carts, desks, and chairs for students in need.

Volunteering your time to these efforts will have a positive impact on your life, the life of the participants in the program, their family, as well as the community. Through civic responsibility, together we can make a difference and enhance the communities where we live.

In one to two sentences, please describe your role at Spectrum.

At Spectrum, I am the Director of Field Engineering for eastern New York. In my role, I am responsible for evolving the products and services we provide to our communities, ensuring that we are providing the latest and most reliable services. I’m focused on expanding our footprint by identifying opportunities to bring our services to areas that currently have no services or outdated options from other providers. I help to make sure we execute on our plans and commitments we make to deliver the services in a timely manner.

Which Spectrum Community Center Assist event did you volunteer for?

I volunteered to assist with the Moreau Community Center in South Glens Falls, New York. It was the first one for the Northeast Region.

How did the volunteer experience impact you?

I was proud to see the employee response and participation in helping update the community center’s appearance and technology.

Why is volunteering in our communities important? 

I feel it is important to volunteer in our communities because we are our communities, and anything we can do to improve them benefits us all. I particularly like the SCCA events because they allow us to provide services and assistance that is aligned with our business. We are experts when it comes to connecting individuals with the world through the internet and our high-speed networks. Whether it is for learning, business, health, entertainment, or socializing, we are impacting people’s lives. When we can provide it at a community center that anyone can access, it provides great opportunities for individuals at many levels to advance themselves and contribute to our community.
