The Spectrum Journey: Employee Stories

One aspect of how Spectrum operates that makes us special is the tendency to look inward for talent, promoting lateral movement within the company. For those already established in their careers, those seeking to start their careers and those anywhere in between, Spectrum provides a rewarding workplace environment with ample opportunities for growth, the exploration of new interests and the acquisition of new skillsets. Our employees are hardworking and results-driven individuals, and we strive to support them in investing time and energy into their career development.

Tasked with the job of helping to keep Spectrum’s over 30 million users connected, Spectrum’s field technicians are masterful troubleshooters. In Wayne’s case, being a Field Technician wasn’t any ordinary job, but rather a position that marked the start of his professional career. After being a Field Technician, Wayne transitioned into being a Lead Technician, before taking on the role of a Field Operations Supervisor. With additional years of experience under his belt, Wayne then became a Labor Relations Supervisor, then a Field Operations Manager. Wayne’s journey did not stop there, as he further challenged himself by being a Senior Manager of Contractor Relations, before being promoted to his current role, Director of Field Operations. Wayne earned a total of 7 different opportunities with Spectrum over the years, allowing him to take on more responsibilities as a leader and achieve his career goals. Rewarding hard work and feeding the potential for professional progress in this way is an integral part of our business model here at Spectrum.

“The company continues to invest in me and my career development, and it’s great to say that I work for a company that’s been great, not just to me, but I also see the opportunity for others.” – Wayne, Director of Field Operations

One of Spectrum’s core company values is to pursue growth and learning, and our employees bring this value to life through seeking out opportunities to expand their knowledge, both for themselves and for their teammates. Ray, a Facility Supervisor, was able to accrue several different facility management credentials himself, while encouraging other employees to participate in training opportunities and shadowing opportunities with Spectrum. When asked about this work, Ray said, “We really do look at it as a win-win situation when our employees get promoted and really do take great satisfaction when our employees are successful.” This attitude of self-improvement while improving those around you is characteristic of Spectrum employees, and key to facilitating the lateral moves within the company and career growth for our employees that we pride ourselves on.

Our employees can also take advantage of the Spectrum Educational Assistance Program, which allows employees to pursue further learning, take classes outside of the workplace and work toward goals for themselves and their careers. Along with this program, Spectrum also offers the Career Advancement program and the Future Leaders Program, where new hires can access leadership development courses as well as an established support network including sponsors, supervisors and career coaches to ensure participant success.

As a member of the Spectrum’s Future Leaders Program, Matthew was able to network with different leaders from a variety of functional areas within the business, and learn more about his own leadership style, propelling his future career growth. Through being curious, challenging themselves on a professional level, and being challenged in their roles, employees at Spectrum develop their own career journeys within a supportive environment conducive to growth.

“It gives me immense pleasure and a feeling of pride to work for a company that believes in its people and promotes from within. At Spectrum, my career has always taken an upward trajectory from the time I have come.” – Vin, Director SMB Direct Sales
