Principal Engineer I - Data Center Infrastructure

We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Engineer I to play a critical role in advancing our on-premise data center infrastructure. The ideal candidate will focus on infrastructure evaluation, scheduling, planning, lifecycle management, and implementing quality assurance (QA) automation. This individual will conduct gap analyses, recommend feature enhancements, and ensure operational stability that meets or exceeds service delivery expectations for application owners. The role offers opportunities to work on transformative initiatives, including the Edge, Cloud, Metal-as-a-Service (MaaS) for zero-touch provisioning of Distributed Cloud Architecture and Infrastructure as Code. The successful candidate’s profile will include:
- Extensive experience administering, integrating, and designing data center infrastructure solutions, including rack/blade server hardware, virtualization platforms, SAN switching, storage technologies, basic networking, and Cloud Management Platforms.
- Strong experience designing physical and virtual solutions for cloud architectures using blade and rack-mounted server platforms.
- Solid expertise in engineering Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC) solutions for workload optimization and placement.
- Proficiency with Cisco UCS infrastructure, including UCS Manager, UCS Central, and Intersight.
- Extensive experience with Dell infrastructure and Dell OpenManage Enterprise (OME).
- Hands-on experience with HPE rack server infrastructure and HPE OneView.
- Proficiency in scripting with BASH, Python, JavaScript, or similar languages.
- Solid understanding of QA testing frameworks, methodologies, and processes.
- Experience with automated builds for new data center infrastructure deployments using Workflow Automation platforms.
- Skills in creating technical drawings and schematics using tools like Lucidchart or Visio.
- Experience working in Agile environments, using tools like Jira to manage projects and tasks.
- Familiarity with Workflow Orchestration platforms and container technologies, including Kubernetes and Docker.
- Experience with Object Storage solutions.
- Knowledge of backup solutions such as Rubrik or Cohesity.

The Principal Engineer I – Data Center Infrastructure role involves close collaboration with internal product owners across teams responsible for Server, Storage, Virtualization, Microservices, and Networking. Additionally, the Principal Engineer I will contribute to developing innovative solutions and strategies for Charter’s Software Defined Data Center (SDDC). The role offers opportunities to work on transformative initiatives, including the Edge, Cloud, and Metal as a Service (MaaS) for zero-touch provisioning of Distributed Cloud Architecture, IaC, and advanced Telemetry systems.
What our Principal Engineer I’s on this team enjoy most:
- Continuously evaluating new and existing server infrastructure capabilities and features to ensure they meet the requirements for both current applications and new product services.
- Contributing to architectural discussions with internal and external peers to ensure solutions align with business and operational needs.
- Collaboration with engineering and operational teams to understand requirements and challenges, providing recommendations and solutions.
- Automation of processes such as compute and storage certification, bare-metal provisioning, and domain-specific workflows.
- Creation and maintenance of technical documentation, including Compute Certifications, implementation guides, technical bulletins, and design documentation.
- Establishing standards for infrastructure deployments and integrations to ensure consistency and reliability.
- Performing other duties as assigned by the manager.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO SPECTRUM
Required Qualifications
- Experience:
- Engineering work experience – 5+ years
- Project management work experience – 5+ years
- Education:
- Masters or Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related field or related work experience
- Technical skills:
- Basic knowledge of related industry specifications and standards IEEE, ANSI, Fiber (Multimode, Single mode, UTP, etc.), Bridging, Switching, Routing, Ethernet and Transport technologies and protocols
- Basic knowledge in network design, network architecture, protocols and network topology
- Basic knowledge in TCP/IP and the OSI Model
- Basic knowledge in using ticketing and software tools to support the current operations.
- Basic knowledge of network devices and basic network appliances Basic knowledge of network designing software, such as Visio
- Skills:
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well with all levels of business users in a professional manner.
- Extensive experience with collaborating and building team consensus when interacting with both the leadership and the implementation teams.
- Abilities:
- Ability to read, write and speak the English language
- Ability to use personal computer and software applications
- Ability to perform duties in a very fast pace environment and ability to learn new technology quickly

- Knowledge of company products and services
- Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE)
- Industry and vendor specific certifications and training preferred (Cisco, Juniper, Alcatel-Lucent, etc.)

The base pay for this position generally is between $110,800.00 and $196,400.00. The actual compensation offered will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. We comply with local wage minimums and also, certain positions are eligible for additional forms of other incentive-based compensation such as bonuses.
